[i]blog Sketch

I was asked to do a drawing last week for the [i]blog, the IARc department's blog at UNC-G. This sketch is of the Lincoln Financial building in downtown Greensboro.  I chose this subject matter because this building can be viewed from the windows on the northeast side of the studio as it is the tallest example of architecture in the downtown area.  The sketch will be used as a backdrop behind the [i]blog header for the next month.  Be sure to check out the [i]blog for current updates on the IARc department, including faculty and student's class and individual work.

Watercolor Practice

This is a contour drawing I did of Kacie Leisure in the first year drawing class I T.A. for that I later watercolored.  Suzanne showed us a watercolor demonstration in class that really helped me with my watercoloring skills.  I plan to use watercolor more often with rendering, now that I've gained more confidence in this medium.

Elsewhere Drawings

These are drawings of a place in downtown Greensboro called Elsewhere. The space is used as a museum of sorts where artists come to draw inspiration from the mounds of random stuff left over from a thrift store. Drawing the space was very difficult as there is so much stuff that it is hard to filter and it becomes rather overwhelming. I chose to focus on smaller vignettes within the space, allowing the drawings to have more detail.

Dorm Vignettes

These are drawings of my dorm room showing the messiness that is my living space.

Color Practice: Chairs

I really enjoyed this assignment and getting to practice different color mediums. I got to experiment with my prismacolor markers for the first time and discovered that white colored pencil can really successful for creating highlights. The final picture is an example of water color and I found that it was a really good medium for getting the perfect shade of green.

Zach Getting Creative

I had a lot of fun doing these scale figure drawings. It helps a lot to have an interesting model. Zach modeled for all of my drawings. Originally, the poses were very normal with him reading a book and then Zach started getting really creative with the t-square and his jacket. I think Zach has a good future in modeling.

Scaled Figures

I tried to come up with my own style, something more abstract. It is a work in progress.

Drawing Style Practice

This is a view of the Ferguson Building on the UNC-G campus.  I tried out a different illustration style with lots of various forms of hatching.

Ferguson Thumbnails

At first I didn't realize that you could make these smaller so my first one took up nearly the whole page.

Drawings from Tate St. Coffee

I liked these because people watching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I do think that using pen here could have been more successful.

Scaled Figures

I found a brilliant photographer, Noah Bucher, that has a lot of really interesting candid shots of figures. I tried to get a good variety of poses as well as different kinds of people.

I had to put this photo in, because there is nothing in the world that I like to see more than an elderly couple. They make me smile.
